Boredom Sparks Brilliance: How Zoning Out Leads To Great Ideas

In the past, we’ve shared a few brain hacks for maximum effectiveness. Now, we’re excited to share how to make the most of your brain, especially when you’re bored!

Have you ever found that your most brilliant ideas came about while you’re doing mundane tasks such as folding laundry or loading the dishwasher? That’s because when feeling bored, your brain goes into what neuroscientist Marcus Raichle calls “default mode” where a network in your brain starts busily thinking and daydreaming. Check out the TedTalk below, where journalist Manoush Zomorodi shares her experience with zoning out and how boredom sparks brilliance!

Bored and Brilliant

We all use our phones multiple times a day, sometimes for work, sometimes for leisure, and sometimes for distraction. Each time we pick up our phone for leisure or distraction, we are essentially extinguishing the spark in our brain that ignites rapid thinking and daydreaming. As Manoush Zomorodi mentions, limiting distractions, including phone use, can lead to brilliance in the form of creativity, problem-solving, and even self-reflection.

The Personal Kaizen team encourages you to try the “Bored and Brilliant” challenge. Try staring out the window the next time you need a brain break and see the brilliance you discover when you enter “default mode.” Be sure to comment below with any interesting discoveries you make when boredom sparks brilliance!
