Personal Kaizen 10 Rules for Life: Rule 6

Learn and Grow throughout your Life

The Personal Kaizen team is sharing our 10 Rules for Life. Please watch all of our videos beginning with Rule 1.

RULE 6: Learn and Grow throughout your Life.

The growth theory of intelligence believes success is based on hard work, learning, and training. Fixed-mindset individuals dread failure because it is a negative statement on their basic abilities, while growth mindset individuals understand that performance can be improved and learning comes from failure.

Our personal kaizen community was started to help us all become better people at work and home. Below we share a few simple ways you can learn and grow.

Set improvement goals for your life and review them regularly.

Identify a few goals for this month or this year. Be sure to write them down and update them yearly on New Years Day or your birthday. If you aren’t sure what to improve, a loved one will be happy to give you some ideas!

Learn from books and videos

Our generation has more access to information than any generation before us. Subscribe to podcasts and communities where you can learn and grow. Buy recommended books and read what interests you. Realize that the big questions about life haven’t changed – books that have been around for hundreds of years are time-tested and still relevant.

Challenge yourself to try new things; create a bucket list of life experiences

Travel Bucket List Example

Completing a few items from a bucket list every year is a wonderful way to maximize your life.

You can create bucket lists in different areas of your life. Here are a few examples:

  • Travel Bucket List
  • Reading Bucket List
  • Movie, Concert, or Show Bucket List
  • Hiking Bucket List
  • Experience Bucket List

Write down some dream experiences, or copy some of these 1,000 bucket list ideas if you are struggling to come up with your own ideas.

Don’t fear failure – this is experience.

Focus on stopping bad habits and starting good ones

Use the compound effect to your benefit. Many small improvements repeated for weeks and years will result in massive gains.

I have used the DuoLingo App to learn a language this way. Five minutes of daily practice over 5 years is equivalent to over 150 hours of learning – or what the instruction in a collegiate minor!

Suggested Action: Create a Bucket List with at least three stretch goals for your life. If you already have a Bucket List, review it and add two more items to it.

Please let us know what you think about this rule for life. Rule 7 is next week and covers money and wealth.
